Hi folks. I've just recently stumbled upon Noctis/NICE and am loving it so far. Unfortunately whenever I try to use a GOES module I get the "unknown module" error. I'm hoping someone out there will have some helpful advice. I tried searching the forum archives, but none of the potential solutions I found worked in my case. Here's my situation:

-- Running Win98 SE.
-- I've adjusted my config.sys to free up more conventional memory by adding himem and emm386 commands; now running with 619K free conventional memory at bootup. Prior to altering the config.sys in this manner, I received the "Not enough memory is available to execute command..." error whenever trying to run a module. That error went away and was replaced by "Unknown Module" after changing the config.sys.
-- Running NICE 9.0 full install. All modules are in the proper folder.
-- Goesfile.txt is not read-only.
-- Have tried all versions of the Go! executable.
-- Have examined the troubleshooting.txt with no luck.

So, any ideas? Do I need to somehow free up even *more* conventional memory? If so, does anybody know how to do that?

Thanks for any help offered. The worst case scenario is that I am forced to continue playing wihout using GOES -- and given the fact that I'm enjoying it all so much now, that wouldn't be so bad. :-)

This tends to be the case on windows 98, 95, and ME. I'm actually a little surprised you've managed to get NICE R9 running at all on 98.

But hmm, I wonder why it's giving unknown module instead of a more specific error. That's odd. *ponders*

Where do you have NICE installed? It could be that it doesn't really like a long pathname (say, C:\documents and settings\administrator\my documents\NICE or something like that).. Try putting it in c:\noctis (so you get c:\noctis\modules\noctis.exe), use the GO!.exe's.. If that doesn't help, try running the noctis.exe in the modules folder..

If that doesn't help either, try this:
start -> run -> cmd (or command)..
navigate to c:\noctis\modules (using cd..'s and cd noctis, etc..)
type noctis.exe

Fixed it!

I tried your first suggestions, Megagun, relating to the pathname and to using the noctis.exe located in the modules folder, but with no change.

When I tried the start->run->command method for running the noctis.exe, the "unknown module" message was gone, but now replaced by the familiar "not enough memory" error. This struck me as peculiar. On a hunch, I located an old DOS boot disk that I had used in the past to run some older games. The boot disk allows me to choose whether to run DOS with or without expanded memory (for older or newer titles, respectively). I chose to run without expanded memory. I changed directory to my modules folder, typed noctis, and presto, it worked! Now I have to reboot whenever I want to play, but hey, better than nothing, right?

Thanks a ton for your suggestions, Megagun; in their absence, I had largely given up hope. Now I can explore all the wonderful depth of the GOES system! Whoohoo! :-)

Will I be missing out on any cool features by not running any of the GO! executables? Or does the noctis.exe contain all the NICE 9.0 goodness? (At first glance, things seemed much the same.)

The go!.exe is actually just a loader thing, to give it as much memory as possible... So you won't be missing a thing..

It gets even better. I copied the contents of the config.sys and autoexec.bat from the boot disk into my normal config.sys and autoexec.bat. I still can't use GOES from within Windows, but now I *can* use GOES by doing a start->shut down-> restart in MS-DOS mode. Couldn't do that before. It's easier than having to reboot entirely, not to mention having to track down that boot disk.

So far I haven't been able to come upon any guide entries using the CAT command. But I'm pretty sure it's all working, since I can CAST a new entry myself and then use CAT to call it up. So, would someone be so kind as to tell me the name of a star or planet that definitely has a guide entry, just so that I can test my CAT function and ensure it's working properly? I'm using the latest guide from the NICE website.

Thanks.

The reason for that is that the guide was cleared (though you can still access the old guide with CATOLD) in NICE R9 and so far only a few people have been sending R9 outboxes, and none of them have made any guide comments.

If you can see your own entries with CAT, then it is working fine.

Confirmed. Thanks for explaining things to the newbie. :-) I think I know what I'll be doing for the next few hours...
