| | | | | People familiar with IRC should only need to know the following: | | Server: streyalis.org
Port: 6667
Channel: #noktis |
| | | | | However, people unfamiliar with IRC might want to follow this simple guide to IRC along.. IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat, and is a protocol over which many people can chat with eachother in channels based on often huge server networks. A lot of communities tend to have their own IRC channel somewhere; especially those related to programming, gaming, or general computer usage.
To chat on IRC, you'll need a client. Personally, I'd recommend X-chat, which is available for multiple systems (windows, Linux, ...), has an easy user interface that works wonders when you're on multiple channels, has neat User name colorization, and comes pre-installed on many modern Linux distributions already. Windows users should probably want to grab their X-chat from Silverex.org.
Note that some Windows people recommend mIRC. Myself, I've used that client for years, but when I decided to switch to X-chat due to the excessive number of networks and channels I was part of (which mIRC sucks at with handling), and since I severely enjoyed the nickname coloring. mIRC is shareware.
Once X-chat is installed, open it up and you'll be greeted with a little Network list dialog, aswell as nick settings. Set your nickname, alternate nickname and alternate alternate nickname (myself, I append an underscore to my nickname to get my alternate nickname; you'll need alternate nicknames in case you get disconnected due to a network error, and have autorejoin set to ON). Username should probably be the same as your nickname, and your 'real name' might also be; you don't actually have to enter your real name there.
Once you've set up your name settings, we'll need to add the n00bstories IRC network, on which our channel resides, to the network list. Hit the ADD button on the network list dialog, type in 'n00bstories', hit enter, and hit the 'edit' button to the right of the network list. A new dialog will pop up. Select the first line in the 'servers for n00bstories' part of the new dialog, and hit 'edit'. now type in: | | | | | | | ...and hit enter. You'll now probably want to check 'Auto-connect to this network at startup', uncheck 'Use proxy server', and put | | | | | | | in the 'Channels to join' field. Hit 'close' now, to go back to the networks list, and hit 'close' there. If this doesn't close down X-chat, close down X-chat yourself; your settings will now be saved properly!
Now, start X-chat up again, and you'll find yourself in the official IRC channel for the AnywhereBB community! Note, though, that not at all times people might be active, as IRC is often humorously referred to as 'Idle Relay Chat' instead of 'Internet Relay Chat'...
Have fun! | | | | This message was edited by me, Megagun, on 6th of April 2008. The original message, which I 'destroyed', can be found At this page.
Edit: RJ edit: I personally DON'T use X-Chat, and I think it's stupid, so thanks Mega for making it look like I actually like it when I don't. I think this first post should be more like a wiki and less objective, rather than a post by Megagun under my name.

| | | | Okay, made this a sticky so that way new members can find it easier. | | | | |

| | | | It's a bit out of date now though, don't you think? | | | | |

I should edit it out though

 | | | | Since MIRC is windows-only, and shareware, and has a non-standard scripting language, I advise considering the two following clients as well, both of which are cross-platform and free:
1) X-Chat looks great, has a comparable or greater number of feature than MIRC, lets you block MIRC color codes (So you don't see them (This feature is a godsend with people who like to send black text which is invisible on my black IRC window!)), and is easy to use on multiple channels and servers.
2) IRSSI is text-based, but still easy to use on multiple channels and servers, and does allow scrolling back and such, despite being text-based, and on top of it all, allows you to script in an extremely powerful standardised scripting language (Perl, I think (I think X-Chat might use the same language, but I don't remember)).
Personally, I use X-Chat on Windows, and IRSSI on Linux. I never really liked MIRC, myself.
Edit: The author of XChat decided to make it shareware for windows. There's controversy over whether that's legal or not, considering it was GPLed before, and code contributed by other people can't simply be relicensed without their consent. Someone else (Silverex) has compiled windows versions too, but now he's only making them from the code on CVS, which tends to be unstable... The last stable one at this time is: http://www.silverex.org/download/xchat-2.4.1.exe - assuming he doesn't delete the file eventually.
There's also HydraIRC, which you might like to try: http://www.hydrairc.com/

| | | | One more question on the topic : when do you guys show up on the channels ? I've tried several moments without being able to talk to anyone. | | | | |
|
| | | | Well all the time, I could be on now. If I wasn't about to play half life. | | | | |

| | | | My school's firewall blocks IRC, so I won't be joining any of you in that wonderful domain of fantastical insults and korean jokes. | | | | |

| | | | We dont have korean jokes, but sometimes an insult gets passed around, sometimes... | | | | |
