What kind of planet and what was the temperature?

Edit: I don't think I've even tried 11.6!

I should poke mega for the source for it (I'm not sure if I have it or not; version.txt says 10, so all that means is that version.txt wasn't kept up to date ).

Any of the types I've been to so far in this version -- Felisian, thick-atmosphere, etc.

No bugs on my part.

When you type HELP into the GOES console the screen goes crazy.
written by Cryoburner on Sep 12, 2008 14:19
You must be running an older version, or standard Noctis. The current release of NICE brings up a list of available GOES commands.

One thing that could be improved with that would be to allow it to be followed by another command, like 'HELP ST', and have it display a brief description of what that function does. It might be a little more useful that way. : )

Edit: By the way, typing EDIT into the GOES console causes DWNoctis to freeze. Alt-tabbing to the console window showed that the DOS editor was open there, and closing it resumed control. Interestingly, there are no harmful side effects in the DOS version of NICE, aside from a P appearing on the display. In standard Noctis IV, the command causes some impressive rainbow effects, as seen in the following screen captures that I took once before. You can't get a proper screenshot when the screen messes up like this, so I had to use a digital camera. : )

In any case, it's extremely simple to fix, since you can just create an empty text file in the modules foder and rename it to edit.com or edit.bat. It might be worth checking for other DOS commands that can potentially mess things up as well.

Hi. I'm new to this forum. I saw I was playing the "wrong" (don't take that the wrong way!) version, since everyone else had the NICE version and it was so much better looking. So I downloaded it. I got all hyped up over the features, to find all the starters required too much conventional memory. It said I may be able to find help on here, so here I am. I run Windows ME, Celeron processor (ewww...).

Thanks!

You can try the Windows port, DWNoctis, which can be found in version 11.6a, available here. The DOS versions have trouble running on some systems. There's a fair chance the Windows port will work for you, if you haven't already tried it.

Nope. When I ran the .exe the window came up and just sat there, being grey. The DOS window that was up behind it had a lot of stuff on it, including something about "KEYDOWN" 17 & 18. The .bat just errored immediately and closed.

Again, Windows ME, Celeron. Those GO's can't get enough conventional.

How much RAM do you have?
And another thing to do it to try a computer that isn't running the crappiest OS in the world.
That is if you have one...

The amount of RAM shouldn't make a difference, since DOS programs are typically restricted to only 640KB. Depending on the system, this amount can vary, resulting in less than 640KB available to Noctis. Maybe try freeing up your conventional memory?

Sorry, but if the windows version isn't working, then I doubt that windows ME and it are very compatible. It probably tried to do something, call an API function, etc, that windows ME doesn't support. You also don't have the control over DOS programs' memory which you do in XP (where you can give each program its own autoexec and config file and its own memory space), and you can't reboot to DOS like you can in 98... You might be SOL.

What you can do is open a command prompt, type mem, see what's listed. I do remember there being a compression-related .sys file or something that was completely unnecessary and automatically loaded on startup, that just wasted RAM, and could be gotten rid of. I don't remember if ME loaded it automatically and no longer used a config.sys or what. If so you'd want to rename it (the compression .sys file) so that it ends in something other than .sys. Like .bak.

Unfortunately I don't remember the file's actual name.

(Mind you this is all from memory from 9-12 years ago or more... I don't know if this was in ME or in 98 or 95... or all of them)

If you're going to play NICE for the reason of it being played by "everyone else", I wil suggest you to reconsider your choice.
Not only that sentence isn't true, but the fact that Noctis IV recently saw the rebirth of the StarMap updates service, have made it look being more "alive and kicking" than NICE.

I'm saying this with interest of course, I don't wanna lie and say I'm being objective; my point against NICE is that it hasn't even been consistent with internal releases.
So if you want your stars labels to be seen by everyone and help unveiling Feltyrion's secrets wrtiing notes in the GUIDE as well as exploring/studying what others have reported, Noctis IV is what you want.

Frankly, the terrain changes were all made over a very short time, were originally begun only because of bugs in NIV's terrain which had caused bland terrain, terrain duplication, and changing terrain (with changing clouds, weather, day/night), and ended a very long time ago. So this is a silly argument.

If NIV's terrain generator hadn't turned out to be chock full of bugs I wouldn't have broken compatibility with it like that, and if we hadn't found more bugs there wouldn't have been changes in subsequent versions after the first fix.

That said, I do support your effort to revitalize NIV with bugfixes and such.

I got a feature (I think): Sometimes NICE generates a volcanic planet but its very cold and like the NICE suricrasia (Where you jump upon a big box and then it disappears. And some other suricrasian 'features'.
