| | | | Just wondering if anybody around here is into H.P. Lovecraft's works, as I've become increasingly interested in reading them myself. Which book would be good to get started with? | | | | |

| | | | So, you want to come into the paranoid, misogynist, xenophobic world of Lovecraft?
Do as I did, when I was 13 and a friend of mine gave me a book compiling Cthulhu mythos short stories by several writers while on school trip to Germany, and begin by 'The Call of Cthulhu'. It's the only story by Lovecraft involving the mythos, so you'll be done with it.
Otherwise, you could try: * 'The Dunwich Horror and Others' * 'The Case of Charles Dexter Ward' * 'The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath'
|
| | | | Only one Cthulhu story by Lovecraft? Odd.
Thanks for the recommendations, I'll check em out ASAP.

| | | | I never have entered the paranoid, misogynist, xenophobic world of Lovecraft. May'be I should do that one day, it seems to be interesting and entertaining to read. But first I have to finish Plato's books about Sokrates. | | | | |

But 'The Call of Cthulhu' is the only story where a member of this pantheon is used as a central characters (others may be mentionned in some other stories). All the other members (Nyarla-chan, Shub-shub, Thothoth and so on) were created by August Derleth and other writers after Lovecraft died.
Odd, as you said.

Fthag'n! | This the one you're talking about? link
Also, I know very little about the whole mythos as such, so please try not to spoil too much

| | | | Actually, Call of Cthulhu isn't the only one involving the mythos. It's the only one that carries the name Cthulhu in its title. Although it depends a bit, which stories do you consider to involve the mythos.
Just to mention a few: * Azathoth * Dagon * The Shadow Over Innsmouth * Nyarlathotep * Pickman's Model
EDIT: Damn you fast typers.
By the way, Amayirot, I have a lot of Lovecraft-stories as PDFs. I could send them to you if you want.

| | | | That's the story. Not the book, but that's the story. | | | | |
|
| | | | Well, as long as it'll get me started with the whole business. Thanks for the advice, I'm ordering it ASAP | | | | |

| | | | Nyarla-chan, Shub-shub and Thothoth sound like some damn cute anime heroes. They don't have the same ancient weight as Cthulhu or Dagon. | | | | |

| | | | By the way, Naavis, your avatar looks like some Ketulu mythos minor deity. | | | | |

| | | | I was always partal to The Mountains of Maddnes.
I have three books that collect most of his works. I also have all of the Conan stories collected into two books.
