Along with the whole Europa thing, NASA has dropped the Terrestrial Planet Finder from its budget as well, and its currently postponed indefinatly. It seems like the money and time is being diverted to other things, like getting back to the moon. Plus side is, we are likely in another space race, this time between China and the US instead of Russia and the US. The bad news is, things like the search for other life in the galaxy are getting scrapped to make room.

The American government is also cutting the NASA budget to put more money into their Missile Defence System, which means placing weapons in space, no matter what the politicians say. Last year the Bush administration pressured our then Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martian (now Steven Harper as of Monday) to join in on the defence system, so all of North America would be in on the game. Luckily he stuck to his word and said no, but this made relations with our Southern neighbours even thinner. Even worse, it seems like religion is also part of the cut backs in NASA. Many people in the Bush administration are big believers in their faith, and they probably feel the idea of 'evolution' and science is against how they believed the universe was formed. I don't mind believing in both personally, but they do. Scary.

EDIT: Corrected a spelling error.

NASA is just another tentacle of the ever growing octopus of the Bush administration. When will people learn that missiles are bad, as well as the defence systems.

If you actually read the first sentence, it says that they're putting money into the MDS while taking money away from NASA. The MDS isn't being done by NASA.

Yup, it remains quite hypothetical - we still don't know whether or not the stuff even exists, but at least now we got more data on its possible nature. It's a start, at least, but definitely nowhere near a conclusion.
