Do any of you miss the fationic cannon from the early versions?

Do you think it would have a place in Noctis V (nice effects)

just a thought.
written by Mcwgogs on Jun 06, 2006 16:05
probably not, since crazy people woud just fly around the galaxy blowing up hundreds of planets.

would that change the starmap?.....perhaps if you could only destroy unamed planets.

Noctis is a peaceful simulator/game. Alex won't allow violence of any kind, and personally I don't think it would fit in either. If you want to blow up planets you can find lots of games on the internet that allow you to do so.

By the way, there is a fationic cannon in Noctis I or II. You may try this

....what about rethinking the idea?

not so much destroy a planets as create an explosion to "edit" the planets or stars, making them different....possibly naming your own class....changing the orbit of the planets....creating moons...and the effects would be random and always new....so instead of finding rare planets, you could unintentionally create them.....you could really call a system your own then.
wah... waall-eee

No thanks. You'd have to alter the very base seed for the game in order to make those changes. That, or turn all the changed planets into fully coded objects, making for some HUGE download sizes for updates whenever someone went on an Edit Spree.

So, like I said: No thanks.

true

It would be cool to have a one time only use thing where you make a small sun and one planet to orbit it....no more...than it would be your very own homeplanet.....but.....oh well

Or....a tractor beam to push planets closer to or away from the sun, but not by too much....we don't want to take the fun out of those planets with crazy distances.

(I'm too much of a dreamer I guess......but I bet Will Wright is reading this and stealing my ideas and putting them in "spore")

Actually, you could probably get away with saving a single number for each change made, and these settings would be used in place of the ones from the original seed. From a technical standpoint, there wouldn't be much in the way of this, and altered planets would only require a tiny amount of storage and bandwidth. Of course, that still doesn't mean that editing planets would fit in with the simulation. Noctis is primarily about exploration, rather than creating and destroying worlds.

I do think it would be cool to have a couple extremely rare appearances of the fationic cannon thrown in though. Perhaps, there could be a rare chance to encounter an NPC with a fully functional cannon destroying some unsuspecting and unnamed world. And maybe there could be the rare possibility of finding an ancient technological artifact on ruin covered worlds, providing a one-time-use recharge for the cannon. The ship's computers could have been modified at some point to prevent firing on planets that are either named, capable of sustaining life, or within a certain radius of the home system. This, coupled with the rarity of the item, would prevent someone from destroying hundreds of planets. : )

On a tangent, I think it would be best if a destroyed planet wasn't completely vaporized, but instead left as a cloud of rubble, or a core surrounded by debris. That way, you wouldn't need to worry about its destruction significantly messing up the orbits of the surrounding moons, since its mass would remain about the same. Also, this could create constant meteor showers on the planet's moons, with occasional entry of larger chunks forming impact craters. : )

I wish the the *Noctis V ideas" thread didn't die out (last post was.....ermmmm....a while ago) >_<

I suddenly have these ideas....

Randomly appearing "Hyperspace lanes" would be cool, they randomly appear....the exit is random....and after they are used....zhloop!....they close foreever.

I just thought it would be nice to have more interaction with planets other than landing on them....
Perhaps a rare tractor beam (like the rarity you described, Cryoburner) you could use to smash an asteroid into a planet....and.....depending on the asteroids size and composition.....it would cause wildly different things on the planet (only if it's unamed of course) such as clouds, craters......stuff.

(hrmm....the thread has gone from "Faitionic cannon"....to ...."Ideas for rare terraforming items" )

Why don't you post the ideas in the thread then?

Every forum aI've ever been to usually takes bumping an old thread as a bad thing....I do the same in all forums to be careful

Well, I don't think any of us minds it if you'd bump a post with some new creative content.. As long as you don't bump a 1-year old thread only to say "I like that idea", it's pretty much okay..

.....I've seen that happen so much....You all know "Command and Conquer" right?

Well someone bumped a Red Alert 2 thread from 2002 and they said: "Whan is rad aleert 3 cooming oot. and then I'm like:.................>_<......*thud*

Anyway.....I'll be sure to post in that thread now.........I have ideas that need to get out before my head explodes

I kind of like the idea of having rare naturally occurring wormhole-like objects. They wouldn't actually need to close after using them, as it would probably be enough just to make them only work in one direction. That way, you couldn't easily return, but they'd still be there for others to get stranded in the middle of nowhere. : )

I think that it's probably best not to have terraforming tools. Also, the stardrifters aren't known to have a 'tractor beam', but they do already have a far more powerful fationic cannon. If a fationic cannon were added as described in my prior post, it could potentially cause impacts on its target's neighboring moons, creating a similar, though less direct effect.
