Just a little poll without a poll, here: what is the LATEST Noctis IV CE release (version number) that works for you without parts of it crashing due to memory limitations?

R11.5fix for me, which is the latest...

Version 11 worked for me, but 11.5 does not. I have to use one of the numbered variants in the modules folder to get it to start. I've already mentioned that a couple other times though.

By the way, thanks for fixing the key commands while in front of screens in the new patch. It was inconvenient having to back away from the landing screen just to toggle the terrain and cloud filters. : )

I use R11.5fix without a single problem on my old PC. On my main computer it doesn't work with any method I have tried...but it's the PC's fault I believe.

Well, let's say it works.. err.. half then.. At least you can run *some* variant of the game..

The key commands in front of screens bug was pretty weird, even more so because the code.. well.. pretty much shouted out 'Don't accept input keys whenever some player is looking at the GOES screens'..

Or, in pseudocode:
GET INPUT KEYS
which was changed into:
GET INPUT KEYS WHEN THE PLAYER ISN'T LOOKING AT ANY SCREEN

veeeery weird, and I blame SL for doign such a dumb mis.. well.. I guess it was probably me who introduced that bug...

Crap

Anyways, I'll see if I can *for reals* fix some of the memory limit stuff now, by.. well.. getting rid of the HELP stuffs.. Or maybe the ingame sector map.. or something... I might improve some older code..

Doublepost galore!

Someone who 11.5 didn't work for, try this:

http://home.deds.nl/~megagun/temp/NiceR115fixtest.rar (removed HELP control keys)
extract that in the MODULES folder, then run "Old go!.exe".. See if that works..

Old go!.exe runs the noctis.exe (not any of the numbered ones)..

Also, make sure you try STing some star... say.. ST varanius

Thanks.

----
Edit:

If that doesn't work, try:
http://home.deds.nl/~megagun/temp/nicer115fixmoretest.rar
Same thing (run old go!.exe).. This time, I removed the "New To Noctis?" dialogue messages at the beginning of the thing, which were (blasphemy!!!) hardcoded messages in the game (took up about 10KB in most exe files) If this doesn't work for you guys, I have no idea what would..

Also, if old go!.exe doesn't work for you, can you check all of the others (Alternate and Normal), and report back which one does work? That'd be nice. Thanks.

Neither the Normal, Alternate, or Old launchers worked using using those.

All three launchers worked with these. Thanks for the feature cut! : )

I can understand a missing bracket or a weird segmentation fault.
But, damn... That's the complete opposite.

I'm going to be an ass now and point out that if the true Windows version of NICE where being worked on, these silly conventional memory barriers wouldn't be an issue...

...Aaand now I'll go back to lurking.

Yeah, well, I thought about this for a while yesterday...Instead of working on the DOS version, I'd bring back and polish up the Windows version of NICE, and make it equal to R11.5..

Unfortunately, the EXTREME HIGH AMMOUNT OF WORK involved with this really puts me off here.. Plus, there are some weirdnesses going on in the Windows build.

What'd really be best, is a single sourcecode of NICE that can be compiled for both Windows and DOS. Currently, there are two seperate sourcecodes. :/

By all means, go ahead and do what you feel is best. A true Windows version wouldn't help me anyway; I'm a Linux guy now (Ubuntu, in case you're interested). That also means I won't be able to enjoy Noctis V if it comes out either...

Great. I came across sounding sour, didn't I? Well, I can't pretend I am not a little miffed at the fact I'll most likely never find Noctis on Linux, but that doesn't prevent me from respecting the limits of Alex and yourselves (by which I mean you and ShadowLord).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't Lino work on Linux now?

Tried DosEmu?

I know I've heard of Bensel once managing to get it to run using something.. I think it was DosEmu, yeah..

Also, does DWNoctis not run under WINE?

I COULD try the avenues you mentioned, Megagun. But who says Noctis would work as good? I'd rather not have it at ALL then have it work half-assed (yes, I'm strange like that). Besides, that still doesn't get me what I truly want, which is an official Linux port (though not necessarily by Alex).

cd/rars/Megagun/wnicer115 (410 Kb)
DWnoctis and WNoctis. My latest release this is.. Oh, and it uses a 640x400 sized screen instead of a 320x200 sized one.

Not working yet:
*Planetfilters while on stardrifter
*Making movies
*Viewing surfacemap (F10 is a windows key? Whatthe..?)
*PortableGOES (Disabled temporarily)

Comments/bugreports appreciated, as always.

BUG:
*Critters are invisible
wah... waall-eee
written by Magnulus on Apr 13, 2007 12:24
I suppose it's still really 320x200, right?
