I don't care if it knows what city I live in, what I'm concerned about is if people can get my street address and real name by just looking. I thought ISPs were supposed to keep that at least hidden.

Have you even been listening to everyone saying how inaccurate these are? At best, they can find a town near you, and at worst they might only be able to determine your country. It's based on your IP address, and they can't get your address just from that. This map site doesn't even list who each point corresponds to, and just provides a list of towns where visitors came from, and places a star for each town.

Visitor list updates every 5 minutes. Map updates daily.
I think it's that "Map updates daily" part. By "updates" they probably mean "resets". Or maybe they're just Loco.

Those matchmaking services are likely able to target their ads to one's location more accurately due to their constantly updated databases of user submitted locations. If someone in your area using the same internet provider as you submits their location to such a service, they can determine that similar IP addresses will also likely come from that area.

I can't really understand how the hell this is supposed to work.

Today it's the first time I spot a "star" in northern Italy, but it says Garlasco...well this satellite can't read quite good and hints for the infamous murder site: but I'm in Grugliasco you dumb satellite.

[EDIT]
satellite...don't know what I was thinking!

[EDIT 2]
Now there's a San Mauro Torinese, that's a lot more believable it is me.

I finally showed up on the map -- I think it's me, anyway. I don't know of anyone else here who's from South Dakota.

Naturally, the location given isn't even within my ISP's* service area. Not by a longshot.
