RIP to the man who helped influence just about everything else that came after Dungeons & Dragons.

Sniff sniff.
I think the next DnD should have a memorial to him, like Izchak in Nethack.

D&D was my gateway game, although it was at the very beginning of 3rd edition, some 7 years ago. I've played in a few other systems since then, including some homebrew, but I still have a soft spot for 3e.

And then I went and married the man who introduced me to the game. So I suppose that's a double debt.

Whatever you think of D&D itself, it's probably what got the whole RPG ball rolling. I know my life is definitely richer for it.

Gygax indirectly nearly killed me several times when I was twelve!

See, when I was a kid, I used to play DnD with two of my friends, and for some reason, I couldn't keep a straight head during it, so our GM would say "There's a band of orcs coming up behind you in the hallway!" and I would burst out laughing. In fact, I'd laugh so hard that I couldn't breathe. I would spend the next five minutes gaining back my ability to inhale and recuperating from my brush with death.

So yeah... RIP, Gygax.

Wow. What surprising and shocking news from one of the great creators of the RPG genre. R.I.P. Gary Gygax.
