ah didn't learn anything!

I've created a Greasemonkey script which makes ABB's new layout waste much less space. Specifically, it removes the side bars and most of the top and bottom bars. This is what it looks like after installing the script: cd/pngs/Selbio/nocramp (151 Kb)

Firefox users:
Install the Greasemonkey extension then navigate to http//www.selb.us/pl2009_thingy.user.js. It should ask you if you want it to install the script; let it do so and refresh ABB.
Opera users:
Follow the instructions at http://my.opera.com/Contrid/blog/2007/02/11/how-to-greasemonkey-in-opera to set up user script support. After you've done that, download http://www.selb.us/pl2009_thingy.user.js and put it in the folder. Restart Opera. I haven't personally tested it, but it should work.

EDIT: Just so it's clear, this is meant to be used with no space-saving user preferences set. Otherwise things look funny. This is in large part because ABB has a funny habit of trashing my settings all the time.

What options are selected for your session on ABB? I have "I've got quite a big screen" and "disable frame width limit" checked and I don't really think that ABB is cramped. I also have a 1280 x 800 screen resolution and am using Google Chrome. Chrome already maximizes the amount of space a website has.

I don't really want to send another thread spinning into an argument on whether or not the new PL2009 layout is wonderful or not. This thread exists because I disliked the amount of space being eaten up on all sides and the general cramped feeling of being boxed in, so I did something about it. If you want to defend Alex's design decision, that's cool with me, but this isn't the place.

It looks like it could be useful for anyone who has a lower screen resolution, though the empty area in the top and bottom bars is already removable via Postline's settings panel, so it seems this just removes the right bar. There's also the option to use compact sidebars without text descriptions, so I'm curious why you didn't use them there, if the goal was to maximize space. You could probably even move the right bar buttons to the left bar, and possibly scale them down to 50% to free up even more room.

I don't really need the extra space on my screen though. I'm happy with just the frame width limiter disabled. : )

I've crushed the left bar down and decreased the size of the top bar a bit. It's now about as space-friendly as the old Postline.

And Cryo, the reason I didn't move the right buttons to the left is that all those buttons are duplicated on top, and it's much more clear what they do there. My optimal solution would be to trash the left bar and put those buttons in text on the bottom, but this will do for me.

Actually the buttons to the right are slightly different from those on top. The right ones only load the right frame, while the top ones also load a corresponding sidebar. I'm not entirely sure what purpose those sidebars serve, but the buttons provide something nice to reflect in the background. : )

It's also worth noting that the database explorer only appears to the right, which might be important for mods and admins.

But for non-mods and admins, the mods-only buttoms are totally useless (ie: database explorer and defense)

In fact, I loved that stuff of removing the other bar... And I would remove the left one too and also put the buttoms on the bottom...

Awesome work... Bensel? Selbio?

I'd say the difference with Selb's script is noticeable. I tried it and I think I'll leave it on. Kick ass work.

My apologies. I wasn't trying to start an argument by any means. I mentioned that the layout didn't feel cramped to me, but followed it up with reasons why it isn't cramped to me where those conditions are probably different for you and some others. (in fact, most of the users probably don't have 1280x800 resolution, for starters...)

I haven't tested it as I don't have a need for it, but nice work either way.

I've updated it again. The left bar is now entirely gone, and its buttons are relocated to that blank space under the left panel.

Edit: Ajax, I was probably a little harsh. I just wanted to make sure this thread didn't get turned into an argument when it was just meant to pose a solution to one side's gripes.

Note that the 'empty space' under the left panel is also used for PM notifications and hidden forum message notifications (for moderators/admins)

In fact I wodner why it is there, I think that I compalined with someone about it... I had a comple of PMs and I did not knew because I never noticed the thing there...

The inbox buttom being with other colour would be much more clear (like, since it is gray, it could become a bright eye-burning red... everyoen would otice that...)
oatmeal, are you crazy?

You would think so Speeder, but a lot of people missed the big red PM button on the last postline.

Whoops. I'll revert it.

Edit: Reverted.

But hte last postline was not uniformly gray, it was totally multicoloured... I missed it too, since each buttom was a diffrent color, it does not made any diffrence...

Now ALL buttons are gray... Anythig not gray is visible...
