Hello

It occurred to me that it might save time to utilise existing space sim engines that are opensource, then add in detailed planets/flora..

Pioneer already features procedural terrain generation..

In c++.

Prototype with procedural generation
http://pioneer.sourceforge.net/

Code:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/pioneer/

Demo:

ssc page:

[A frontier elite 2 based sim with millions of star systems programmed by three people]

This would save a lot of time and allow work in refining the universe generating/planet generating algorithms, as well as get a leg up from the existing coders..in return the wonderful universe created could be made compatible with pioneer..

Starting a page on moddb www.moddb.com, gamedev.net, sourceforge etc will probably attract those with a lot of useful skills/interest..

Some potentially useful links

That is a lot of links. I'm familiar with a number of those sites, though some I hadn't seen before.

I decided to try the latest precompiled binaries of Pioneer, but only received a nondescript "runtime error", which wasn't particularly promising. : |

Based on screenshots, Pioneer's engine seems to be in a somewhat early stage, at least in terms of the features we'd probably be looking for in Noctis. The surfaces look to be very simple up close, and probably not all that interesting to explore. As the game seems to be centered more around flight, it's difficult to say how well its engine could be adapted to detailed surface exploration. I think there are some general differences in the focus on what makes a good engine for a space trading game, compared with what would work best for a game based on exploration. I'm not really sure how well fitting Noctis into an existing engine would work.

In any case, I think the details are where most of the effort would be required, anyway. About the only thing an existing space sim engine might really help with would be the basic foundation of producing a seamless space to surface planetary engine with proper level of detail reduction for the terrain. That is, of course, assuming the engine in question handles that well to begin with.

Also, as mentioned in another thread, Alex may be resuming work on a new 'official' version of Noctis, so it may be best for the community project to become a different type of exploration game, rather than one located in the traditional space setting found in Noctis.

It's a nice collection of links though. : )
oatmeal, are you crazy?

Or have it be a completely different type of game in the Noctis universe, like a Stranded type game, only on a planet, and with a felysian. Something in a completely different genre but still being a Noctis game would be nice. Having it take place before the mass disappearance of the Felysians would be cool too.
