Okay, new version:

cd/zips/Kristos/nightbugs(2) (76 Kb)

Changes:
-Changed the Max FPS key from F1 to F11.
-Much Speed Improvement
-FX buffers are 640x480 to speed things up. Stretched onto the full resolution of the program.
-Colored by a 256x256 color map now to allow for cool smooth color changy effects later.
-The value of the pixel in one FX buffer is from 0 to FFh, the value in the other is from 0000h to FF00h, so the color rendered to the screen is the memory location in the color map pointed to by the sum of the two values.
-Sparkles!
-Uses a key input library I wrote at the same time. Actually multiple key input libraries. Have yet to tidy them up as well.
-Lots of little things you'll never notice.

Very incomplete. But I felt like it was time to show my progress.

Source code sloppier than ever. I'm editing the thing between and around my school/work schedule... Right now just focusing on adding features and optimizing. After I get all that figured out I'll tidy up the source and my libraries.

I just managed to crash it. I pressed F5 for windowed mode. Then when I press F4 the program crashes. Pressing F3 does the same, it seems.

Yes, I have only updated mode zero (F2). Don't press F3, F4, or F5 again.

When I get things stable, I'll update the link on the first post.

UPDATE
Okay, I've updated it to be stable and cooler with the different modes. My favorite is F5. Use the download link in the post above, or the new one on the first post in this thread.

nightbugs pulse
cd/zips/Kristos/nightbugs(pulse) (64 Kb)
I made it pulse and made the background sparkles less distracting.

Since editing messages doesn't seem to show new activity, this is a new post to say a new version is out with a pulse effect. I'd love to have your opinions.
For example:
-What do you think of the pulse?
-What about the background sparkles?
-The colors?
-The colorful border around it all?
-The motion paths?
-The overall speed?
-The transition effects?
Wow, what an example. I don't know if there's much else you could answer.

Thanks y'all.

I like it, it's beautiful. But it all seems a bit too fast. Maybe if everything was slowed down, to make it seem like the dots were slowly drifting along. The sparkles are pretty, but they are blinking too fast.

Also, I think it would look nice to have the colors slowly change.

I like everything else. The zooming transition, the motion paths, the border, they are all very nice looking!

The new version looks pretty good. I still think the background sparkles might be a bit too distracting though. Maybe use fewer of them, or make them dimmer. The pulse effect looks fine, though I'm not really fond of the border all that much. I think I prefer just having dark edges. The transition effects look quite nice now, and the colors are fine. It might be interesting to provide the option to switch to an inverted color scheme though, with the colors fading into a white background. Speaking of a white background, is the 'shock' version supposed to flash random colors for a split second when it hits the brightest point? It looks like it might be overflowing, though I wasn't not sure if that was intentional. : P

Performance-wise, the new version runs quite well. I get around 100 frames per second at 1360x1024 res now. The speed at which the program runs still can vary, due to that timer issue though. I can, however, run a little program I wrote to max the processor out to make sure it runs at the proper speed. : ) The speed seems fine, though perhaps it could be a little slower. If this were a screensaver, I suppose that would be an option in the control panel. The program's looking good, in any case.

Random question that has nothing to do with anything*: What type of music do you listen to?
(*this is a lie)

As do I.

Everybody but me says the same thing. So I will change it.

Oh, I have interesting color scheme plans... very interesting indeed...

It is an unintentional overflow. But that's the only reason that I uploaded that version. Because it's funny!

At 1280x800
When my laptop (2GHz dual core) is plugged in I get 118 fps, when on battery power I get 50 fps.

Yeah. Sometimes it does weird ugly things on my computer, jerking around as something running in the background is being sporadic.

Thanks y'all!
