I'm having a heck of a time figuring out anything on this forum. Basically, I just want to know whether or not I should be sticking with the original Noctis IV, or be using NICE. Or...Noctis Plus? What's that? GAAH!!!

Only reason I'm asking is because Wikipedia mentions that the terrain code is different in NICE, which means comments people have made in the GUIDE aren't really accurate. And that seems like it would take away a big part of the game, to me.

Also, while I'm at it...is there even a Noctis community anymore, or is it dead? Are people still contributing to the starmap?

EDIT: I almost forgot...what is Starmap2, and how do I get it?

Noctis IV Plus is basically Noctis IV with a few additional features, while otherwise maintaining compatibility with it. It's the most recently updated version of Noctis and the two can be used interchangeably.

Noctis IV CE has some additional features, some of which alter the surface terrain of planets, so its guide isn't compatible with the one for NIV and NIVPlus, and is no longer updated. It has some neat extra features, but has some occasional weird bugs as well.

If you're looking to submit any entries to the guide, Noctis IV Plus (or standard Noctis IV) is the one to go with. The starmap usually only receives occasional updates though, as it hasn't really received frequent submissions in recent years.

Starmap2 is a special version of the starmap that's been processed to include planet coordinates in a way that can be quickly accessed. It's used for Noctis Mapper, since the standard starmap's coordinates can't be looked up easily. It can take hours to generate a full starmap2, so it only gets updated occasionally. Noctis Mapper is mainly just to provide some perspective of your current location within the galaxy, relative to the stars that have been discovered and other explorer's last-known locations. As for where to get starmap2, there's one here, though there may very well be newer versions somewhere.

thanks. Sounds like I'll stick with vanilla Noctis IV... unless the features for Noctis IV are really important. I'll read through the thread to see.

I'm still am curious to know if there's many people who still play the game or not.

The latest starmap2 can always be found in my cdisk folder, and generally it gets updated with the latest starmap submission, few weeks after the release of the new inbox.
cd/zips/Neuzd/starmap2 (467 Kb)

I would like to reassure you that there's always someone playing Noctis...of course it's nothing like in the past, but people are still atracted by the simulator.
In recent times outbox submissions have seen their historic lowest, as since May only 1 (one) outbox has been sent.
But it's there in my folder and it's just waiting some company before I publish a new starmap update. I, for sure, will keep on my duty of updating the starmap/GUIDE and starmap2 as long as there's something new! ...and help out new explorers of course.

Ahh, thanks for your reply. Makes me feel a lot better

Somehow I think that seeing Noctis dead would break my heart.
