I've been using Macromedia (not Adobe... I got stuck into version 8 of it) Fireworks for the last few years.

But the thing is getting old, very old, and Adobe versions just outright suck.

Someone here know any software that can substitute it? (and this mean: having both raster and vector at the same time, don't pull a inkscape + gimp on me)

Photoshop? : P

I don't really use Fireworks, but I think Photoshop should be able to do most of what Fireworks can do, and a lot more on the raster graphics side. Fireworks apparently has more advanced vector tools though, and functionality geared more toward web design, though it's difficult to say how an older version of Fireworks compares with a recent version of Photoshop. I suppose it also depends a lot on what functionality you actually need. Photoshop's interface is also more complex, and it has a lot of functionality and shortcuts that are kind of hidden away, making it somewhat more difficult to learn.

Hmm... Maybe just go with a newer version of Fireworks, and ignore the parts that suck? : D

Photoshop should die in a fire.

Seriously.

Die? I like Photoshop, if only for the fact that no nicer app does everything I want it to. OpenCanvas was close, but it doesn't show the brush size around your cursor. SAI only allows certain kinds of painting, not compatible with my style. Gimp is a total pain.

CS2 is free, currently. Works on Win7 if you install it somewhere that doesn't use folders with names longer than 8 characters...

What?

Photoshop CS2 on Windows 7 must use DOS-style names? Why the hell is that???

And photoshop is very nice to edit photos. Not much else... (but I must say, that seeing photos edited by photoshop masters is surely impressive)

It's just packed with so many features and bloat, that there's little chance it doesn't do what I want. I don't touch photos, and it's been a while since photos was it's main focus. Painting, vectors, even design and stuff. Main issue is not that it doesn't do what I want (unlike everything else); it's that it does so much other stuff that everything I want is hidden and the program slows down. Or it would if it wasn't the version from 8 years ago or so.

Oh, and the alternative is using foldernames like "progra~2". That works, too. It's just weird. Whatever. I've seen plenty of things that were designed for XP that fail completely on 7, so this annoyance is fairly negligible.

What was the topic again?

Photoshop suport for vectors outright suck.

Obviously, because Adobe want you to buy Illustrator for that...
