Hiya,

I recently wanted to re-visit Noctis again after playing Elite Dangerous and gasping at the darkness of space...

I originally found Noctis on a PC demo disc somewhere.

Nowadays I'm unsure how to play it. What are we doing any more? looking for oddities?

What version are we using, NIV in Dosbox, NIV+?

What outbox do I install, and what kind of external programs like a star mapper are being used?

It appears I'm in the wrong timezone for the Freespych chat too, oh well.

Hello!

And we are having a period of low traffic thanks to Alex being missing...

Most posts here are on Paranoia thread, or on the recently ressurected "whatever" thread, the Fryspych (or whatever, I never write that thing right) is not used much as it was in the past.

First:
WELCOME...
Now that is out of the way:

"Vanilla" Noctis and NIV+ are basically the same thing with NIV+ having a few ACTUAL features extra. So both need some help of the DOSbox variety, but since Noctis/NIV+ was not exactly programmed like a normal DOS game, DOSbox has a problem running Noctis/NIV+ at full speed.

But there have been many suggestions to get around this, and no doubt you will hear about them. [As for myself, I am using what is probably the only computer that has WinXP and can still run NIV+ without problems.]

As for what outbox to install, you would be best off with downloading a new copy of Noctis or NIV+ as they would have the current Outbox (2014).

The current starmapper works fine [even for idiots like me]. neuzd updated starmap2 recently, and is working on making it better... And there were a few extra modules for NIV+, but those are not mandatory.

You can never be in the wrong timezone for Freepsych. Just don't talk to (or feed) Mary.

<grumble>Elite Dangerous...I never got the hang of the ORIGINAL Elite</grumble>
